Q1. Where are you located?
A. We are across from Chesapeake General Hospital on Battlefield Blvd in Chesapeake, Virginia.
Q2. Unfortunately, I am not in the best shape. Can I still learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
A. Of course you can. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is great in that you do not have to be in great shape to learn it or practice it. You will develop many physical abilities as a result of learning and practicing the art. You will build strength, endurance and your cardiovascular system will gain enormous benefits from your training. Amazingly, one of the top BJJ competitors in the world only has one hand.
Q3. How long do classes last?
A. Kids classes are 45 minutes long. Adult classes are 1 hour
Q4. How many classes may I or my child attend?
A. You or your child may attend as many classes as you would like. We recommend attending at least 2 classes per week for adults. Children are required to attend at least 2 classes per week in order to keep on par with their peers.
Q5. Should I or my child practice outside of the academy?
A. Honestly, it is difficult to practice techniques without a partner. However, focusing on aspects of your training such as flexibility, strength and movement drills outside of the academy can help you progress inside the academy. Children are another matter. We strongly recommend reviewing techniques at home with your child. If you have any questions about a technique, feel free to ask one of our instructors and they will gladly explain it.
Q6. Are classes safe?
A. Our classes are extremely safe and, more importantly, they are fun. The kid’s classes are closely supervised by our instructors and the child’s safety is paramount.
Q7. What should I wear on the first day?
A. We suggest all students wear comfortable shorts with a tie waist and t-shirt. A sports bra is recommended for our female students as well.
Q8. Is BJJ the same thing as the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship)?
A. No, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu does not allow strikes in competitions. Jiu-Jitsu is just one aspect of mixed martial arts. To be a good mixed martial artist, you must be proficient on the ground.
Q9. What is MMA (Mixed Martial Arts)?
A. MMA is a style of martial arts that blends BJJ, Muay Thai, Western Boxing, Wrestling and Judo in the most effective fighting system ever devised. A true mixed martial artist is competent in all aspects, but many have one style that makes up the bulk of their skills.
